Singing the blues in the land of bluegrass.

I don’t know if anyone noticed, seeing as how it’s wild-card weekend and all, but Louisville and Kentucky are battling it out at Rupp right now.

Then again, given the state that both Louisville and Kentucky are in at the moment, I don’t think anyone wants to notice.

Louisville was ranked #6 early in the season, but have bumbled their way to a 9-4 start heading into today’s game. You can count their impressive wins on one finger, as their only win of note came against UNLV.

Other than that, Rick Pitino's Cards have whiffed, and part of the reason why is their play at home. Call it a freefall at Freedom Hall if you will, because the place has been anything but a fortress this season, with the Cardinals losing to BYU, Dayton, and Cincinnati at home.

As for Kentucky, Billy Gillispie’s probably wondering what he got himself into, as the Wildcats have looked awful so far, and are pretty lucky to be 6-6.

A loss to Gardner-Webb at home in their second game might have been mildly shocking, but tolerable. But, last week’s 81-72 loss to San Diego at Rupp was an entirely new low.

It also could have been the jolt the Mildcats needed, as they went out the next time around and wiped the floor with the athletic power that is Florida International, otherwise known as the school that helped big-mouth Lamar Thomas get canned.

Maybe conference play will bring out the Louisville that was supposed to be a serious contender this season, but if not, they’ll be joining the Wildcats in the NIT, which is where UK will be headed unless they can take advantage of an SEC that, including their performance, isn’t its usual self right now.

It’s a rare sight to see both of these teams not at their best in the same year, and we shouldn’t get used to it either, because just when we start to, they start kicking your ass again.
It’s 31-30 Kentucky at half. Someone needs to get ahold of Andre’ Woodson and Brian Brohm to bring some life into this one.
